When the van they were operating hit the S-Line streetcar in Salt Lake City on Friday afternoon, the streetcar derailed, injuring one person. The event happened in Salt Lake City near 2100 South, where the S-Line rails intersect Main Street, at around 3:30 in the afternoon. According to agency spokesperson Carl Arky, the incident required the Utah Transit Authority to temporarily halt S-Line operations between South Salt Lake City and Central Pointe.
The crossing gate was down, the lights were flashing, and a vehicle was moving north on Main Street when, according to Arky, “apparently in some manner the van struck the side of the S-Line train.” “The force of the accident pushed a few wheels off the tracks as the S-Line train crossed Main Street through that crossing. Although (the train) is technically still upright, a derailment has technically occurred.”

No passengers on the train were hurt, according to Arky, but the driver of the van was taken to the hospital with what are thought to be non-life-threatening injuries. Although there are still active transit lines, Arky predicted that the train will not be in service for the ensuing several hours.
Our Central Pointe Station and our station at 500 East on the S-Line are now connected by a bus bridge, he explained. “An S-Line will continue to run between 500 East and Fairmont. In the area between Fairmont Park and 500 East, there is still traffic.”
