A Mooney M20 was the plane. The Federal Aviation Administration states that the plane was registered to Hofer Aero LLC, a company with its main office in Mooresville. According to a flight history on Flightaware.com, the aircraft left Lake Norman Airpark and arrived in Northeast Florida on Sunday.
The crash deaths have not been named by the authorities. There is an investigation going on by both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board. There is still no word on what caused the crash.
Action News Jax was able to get radio contacts from the pilot of the aircraft, who told the air traffic controller that the “door just popped open” and they had to return for a landing. Even though the plane was given permission to turn around, communications were cut off.
