A man was charged with first-degree murder on Monday, according to the prosecution, after it was alleged that he shot and killed a Southern California sheriff’s deputy and fired at a second deputy last month. Darnell Calhoun, a deputy with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, was shot and killed on January 13 near Lake Elsinore by a pickup truck-based assailant, according to authorities.

According to the Southern California News Group, Jesse Navarro, 42, is accused of several offenses, including the attempted murder of the second deputy as well as special circumstance claims of murdering a peace officer and firing from a moving vehicle. It was unknown on Monday if Lake Elsinore resident Navarro has a lawyer who could represent him.

The second deputy, who was not identified in court filings, shot and seriously injured Navarro, who is still in the hospital. After he leaves the hospital, an arrest date will be set. According to the sheriff’s office, Calhoun, 30, was shot while responding to a report of unidentified problems in the rural Lakeland Village area. Over the space of two weeks, he was the second deputy from Riverside to die in the line of duty.

Deputy Isaiah Cordero, 32, was killed on December 29 after he pulled over a pickup truck in the community of Jurupa Valley. The wounded suspect in the crime has been identified. As Cordero drew near, the driver fired. After a chase, a shootout resulted in the death of the driver.
