A half-million dollar grant has been given to Lake County to investigate flood mitigation measures. Following Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, certain areas in Lake County experienced weeks-long flooding. Tom Simerville still vividly recalls the incident.

Simerville has been residing in Astor, a community in Lake County located along the Saint John’s River, for some time. “Since before Irma,” he replied. And Irma was the one who forced him to get his house ready for flooding. He converted several of his home’s doors into windows during Hurricane Irma. He would follow Ian for weeks by scaling one of those windows.

Simerville claims that the pumps he installed and the resealing he performed helped keep a lot more water out than they could during Hurricane Irma. “During Irma, it was a foot deep inside,” Simverville remarked. “It would have been a little higher than that because it was higher than Irma.” The Lake County emergency management director, Megan Milanese, is aware of how severely Astor was damaged.

“Our crest was at 4.7 feet, which is a historic amount,” the speaker stated. “We then kept an eye on that circumstance. Astor, I want to add, was submerged for more than sixty days.

However, Milanese monitors the entirety of Lake County during storms. Additionally, they have recently been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to investigate strategies for making the county more flood-resistant. We’ll use that money to conduct a vulnerability assessment for the entire county, Milanese added.

He is unsure of how much the county could do for Simerville to keep the river at bay. But he believes it might benefit other localities. Simerville stated that there are other flooding stories involving lakes and other water features where residents may be able to receive assistance.

The county will be able to determine potential projects to aid in its protection during this phase. It is so centred on planning. One benefit of this, according to Milanese, is that it qualifies us to submit future applications for more resiliency awards. “So that we can then apply for funding to make those projects happen once we identify projects that would be good for the community.”

But the river sort of acts as it pleases. You really can’t do anything about it. According to the county, it could take one to three years before efforts to defend against flooding are really put into action.
