DUCHESNE COUNTY, Utah — Police say that a couple is thought to have stolen a debit card from a mailbox and then spent $1000 on shopping.
According to the affidavits, Russell Robert Sweat, 47, and Darci Kaye Gerhardt, 39, were booked into the Duchesne County Jail on Wednesday for 16 felony counts of illegally getting a credit card and 16 misdemeanour counts of theft.
In September, the victim called the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office because she saw that her checking account had gone into the red.
According to the affidavits, she found several charges on her card that added up to $1,551 spent in fourteen days. The payments were made at gas stations and stores from Duchesne County to Salt Lake County.
Police looked at security footage from places where the card was used and found that Sweat and Gerhardt were responsible.
According to the affidavits, the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office talked to the two about how they used the card on October 12.
Sweat and Gerhardt told the police that they thought a person named “Duckie” had permitted them to use the card.

The affidavits say, “They said that Duckie had given this card to Sweat and Gerhardt to use on different occasions.” “Neither of the suspects told us much about this Duckie.”
The two suspects told police that Duckie was with them when they used the stolen card and that they gave it back to Duckie after each use. They also said that Duckie was with someone named “Bobbert.”
According to the affidavits, police looked at security footage from seven of the fourteen stores and only saw Sweat and Gerhardt using the stolen card. No other suspects were seen with the two.
Sweat and Gerhardt are both on probation. In the last ten years, Gerhardt has been convicted of multiple felony theft and fraud charges.
