A Fatal Accident on Route 222 Closes Southbound Lanes for Several Hours

Local news from EAST COCALICO TWP, Pennsylvania: On Tuesday, a fatal accident shut down six hours of southbound Route 222 between Reading and Lancaster. It was reported shortly before 3 p.m. that a collision had occurred in Lancaster County’s East Cocalico and Ephrata townships.

A Lancaster County 911 supervisor told 69 News that the coroner was called to the scene, but police have not yet released any details about the crash. Photographs taken at the scene showed a number of vehicles, including a commercial box truck, all of which had been involved in the collision.

Highway 568/272 in Brecknock Township, Berks County, is closed southbound. Drivers were directed to follow Route 272 South until they got past the crash scene. On a Tuesday night when traffic is usually light in Lancaster County, Debby Hertzog’s 20-minute drive took an extra hour.

“The road was just jam-packed,” Hertzog remarked. “I assumed there was some sort of mishap.” Alfred Baker of Maryland said, “I got the notice that there was an accident and had to redirect myself.”

According to Baker, he was delivering packages from Maryland when a car accident forced him to take a longer route. As the sun set and Baker had no idea where the road would turn, he was “pretty much just trying to navigate me.” At approximately 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Route 222 South reopened. The name of the deceased has not been made public by crews.
