As was already mentioned, Dahmer’s eventual imprisonment was actually caused by the polaroid images; if they hadn’t been discovered, it’s probable that he would not have been apprehended. Before Tracy Edwards reported Dahmer in 1991, police had not looked into his apartment despite Dahmer having a criminal history and receiving numerous complaints from the public about his behaviour.
74 polaroids in total were discovered. Most of them were shot inside Dahmer’s residence. While some of them were of his victims while they were still alive, the bulk was of their mutilated body parts, frequently arranged in a sexual manner. When police saw the images, they phoned for assistance. When they arrived, they opened Dahmer’s fridge and discovered the severed head of a Black guy.
Four decapitated heads were found in Dahmer’s kitchen, while seven skulls were found in his bedroom after a thorough investigation. He had two human hearts and a piece of arm muscle in his fridge. A complete human torso, a bag of human organs, and some human flesh leftovers were all in his freezer.
Investigators also discovered two whole skeletons, two severed hands, two severed penises, a mummified scalp, and an acid drum with three torsos within it in Dahmer’s flat. Later, Dahmer acknowledged that he had prepared and consumed pieces of his victims and claimed that he had been gathering the skulls to create an altar.
The Polaroid images were taken by Dahmer to commemorate the occasion and “keep him company,” according to The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology. Dahmer was given 16 life sentences in jail in 1992 after killing a total of 17 people.
At the Columbia Correctional Institution in 1994, Christopher Scarver, another prisoner, killed him.
