Investigators from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and the Lake County Forest Preserve Police are looking into the death of a 45-year-old man early on Saturday morning at the Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve. According to investigators, the 45-year-old and two guys got into a fight before he passed away.

They were hospitalized after the altercation because of their injuries, but police say they are helping with the investigation. According to task force officials on Sunday, one of the males was charged with a felony weapon charge after a semi-automatic pistol discovered a serial number in his Highland Park home.

Investigators claim that at about 5:10 a.m. on Saturday, Highland Park police responded to a complaint about an unconscious male on the sand in the 0-100 block of Cliff Road. When police located the individual, they discovered he had passed away in the nearby Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve. The countywide task force was contacted and enrolled by the forest preserve police.

According to a news statement from the task force on Sunday, a preliminary investigation revealed that the man who died, a local, walked outside at around 1 a.m. to speak with two males who were creating noise on the lakefront. According to authorities, the resident died due to the three men’s altercation, and the other two guys, aged 20 and 18, were hurt.

The 20-year-old Nicholas M. Caban home in the 3400 block of Dato Avenue was subject to a search warrant on Saturday by detectives from the task force and the forest preserve police. In Caban’s bedroom, investigators discovered a semi-automatic weapon without a serial number that could be traced, according to the police. The conflict in the woodland preserve did not include using a firearm.

The felony charge of unauthorized possession of a firearm without a serial number was approved by the state’s attorney’s office for Lake County. Caban is expected to attend an initial court appearance on Monday morning. Investigations are still ongoing into the older man’s passing. This may bring more charges after the additional analysis and the findings of the deceased’s autopsy.
