Two people were struck: a man, 80 years old, and a lady, 42. They were both brought to the hospital, where they passed away.
“It’s regrettable. It’s one of those situations where our job as first responders is to kind of show up and try our best. And there were members of our staff. They made every effort to give them a chance “says Des Plaines Fire Department Deputy Chief Matt Matzl.
A gas line was damaged and the restaurant next door’s windows were shattered by the power of the collision, causing the nearby businesses to evacuate for a period while NICOR crews tried to secure the situation.
According to Matzl, the gas has subsequently been turned off. The driver, who was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening wounds, was driving with a boy and a girl who were both under the age of 18. No harm came to the kids.
Police are currently looking into what took place to trigger the fatal collision. According to police, there is yet no proof that either drinking or drugs contributed to this collision. When the investigation is over, they intend to reveal more details.
