On December 22, he was recalled by the Hawks, going on to make his long-awaited NBA debut four days later against the Milwaukee Bucks.

He recorded 2 points and 3 rebounds in 13 minutes of action as the Hawks fell 107–77.  Payne was sent to Austin once more on December 30th, this time under the flexible assignment rule.  He was recalled again on January 12, 2015.

On May 9, 2022, Payne was fatally shot in Orlando, Florida after he and his girlfriend had traveled to the home of Lawrence Dority in an attempt to avert a domestic quarrel.  Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors discovered that Payne had died.

The 6’10” height of Payne, Dority claimed, made him feel threatened, and he believed the man was reaching for a weapon, but police found that Payne had not constituted a threat and arrested Dority and charged him with first-degree murder.

Lawrence Dority was arrested on a warrant of first-degree murder and claimed he shot Payne in an act of self-defense, however, OCSO Detective Christopher Gilbert wrote that Payne “did not pose an immediate threat to Dority” and that Dority specifically left the scene to obtain the weapon used in the shooting.
