According to Reuters, Donald Trump attempted to capitalise on the FBI search of his Florida home on Tuesday by referencing the probe in texts and emails asking his supporters to donate to his campaign. An important step in the government investigation into whether Trump improperly removed data from the White House as he was leaving office in January 2021 was the extraordinary search of the former US president’s house.
Trump has not made it clear whether he would run for president again in 2024, but he continues to publicly toss around the idea. Even though the former president is a key player in the Republican primaries ahead of the November midterm elections that will determine control of the US Congress, Trump attempted to portray the search of his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach as a politically motivated action by President Joe Biden’s administration.

The Republican Party and I are being attempted to stop once more, Trump claimed in a fundraising email on Tuesday. It is necessary to expose and put an end to the lawlessness, political persecution, and witch hunt. If Republicans win back majorities in either the House or the Senate in November, his Republican supporters in Congress have threatened to begin a probe into the search itself. The search was announced by Trump in a statement on Monday, but the Justice Department and FBI have declined to comment or even confirm it.
The request would almost certainly also be granted by FBI Director Christopher Wray, a Trump appointee, and his boss, Attorney General Merrick Garland, who was chosen by Biden. However, the FBI could never have conducted the search without the consent of a judge who determined there was probable cause. Biden was not informed about the search in advance, according to a White House official.
