Al Roker, the weatherman for the Today show, provided his Instagram followers with a health update on Friday morning. He added, “So many of you have been thoughtfully inquiring where I’ve been,” and uploaded a bouquet photo with the message. I was hospitalised last week after developing a blood clot in my leg that spread to my lungs.

According to People, Roker, 68, hasn’t appeared on the Today show in the past two weeks. It took his care team some time to determine precisely what was going on, he said on Instagram: He commented, “I am so blessed to be getting fantastic medical treatment and on the road to recovery after some medical whack-a-mole.” Roker has a history of speaking out about his health.

In 2020, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer and had surgery to treat it. I endure setbacks and battles every day, but I never forget how far I’ve gone; he wrote on Instagram earlier this year about the 20th anniversary of his gastric bypass operation. It is not strange that he chose to be open about his absence from the show.

According to the US National Library of Medicine, a pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot ruptures and causes an instantaneous obstruction in the lungs (NLM). According to Roker, this frequently occurs: A blood clot that first developed in another area of the body—typically the leg—travels to the lungs through the bloodstream.

If many clots travel to the lungs or the chunk is vast, a PE can harm the lungs or other organs and be life-threatening. While PE can occur in anyone, some people are at a higher risk than others, including those who have had recent surgery, cancer, heart illness, or lung disease.

According to the NLM, other factors that increase your chance of a PE include being overweight, being older than 40, having a broken hip or leg, not moving for a long time (like on an extremely long flight), pregnancy, childbirth, and other physical trauma.

While symptoms of pulmonary embolism are uncommon, they can include chest pain, shortness of breath, and bloody coughing. If you experience any of these symptoms that are out of the ordinary, you should seek medical attention immediately since pulmonary embolisms require prompt treatment.

Depending on its severity and your medical history, you could require a mix of medications or treatments to dissolve the clot and prevent future ones from developing.
