Andor Episode 11 Storyline

In the opening scene of this week’s Andor, Cassian and Melshi are hanging off a cliff on Narkinia while waiting for an Empire ship to pass. Check-in bonanza, featuring visits from just about every significant character we know is still alive (and one who isn’t), all packed into an episode that runs (without the opening and closing credits) just around 36 minutes or so.

The episode’s weirdest and boldest transition is the cut from the cliffside shot of Cassian and fellow prisoner Melshi, hanging off a cold and steep ledge, to a severe close-up of a view through a mostly empty glass, sitting on top of B2, as estate-settling chatter hums in the background, introducing Maarva Andor’s death offscreen.

When asked if he would like to be alone with Maarva for a final goodbye — before, we later discover, she is “bricked,” a variation on cremation where her body becomes another real brick in the wall on Ferrix – B2EMO has a heartbreaking reaction ready and waiting: “I don’t want to be alone. “I’m looking for Maarva.”

Even if she can’t yet blow up any starships, Mon Mothma’s anxiety level is still through the roof. As her daughter Leida excitedly takes part in what appears to be a Chandrilan CCD, where an elder leads a bunch of youngsters in a series of chants: “Yielding in acceptance, safe in the braid of the old ways,” she gives Cousin Vel a rundown of her tenuous financial condition.

It’s unclear if this means Leida will accept the quasi-engagement Mon has arranged for them; either way, though, we should have seen signs of Leida’s Chandrilan conservatism sooner. It would be a horrible irony, though, if Leida were genuinely okay with the compromise that causes her mother so much distress.

This action-packed episode concludes with pain as well: The news of his mother’s death reaches Cassian at last. He was planning to tell Ferrix that he’d find a way to visit her soon, but it’s not clear if he still intends to do so. It seems likely, however, he should probably reconsider making the trip. Perhaps this is the last of Cassian’s old habits before he fully embraces his future.
