There was no breakfast. No lunch. No dinner. No treats. Not a single calorie. He went from being morbidly obese to his ideal weight as a result.
Angus Barbieri, 27 years old, weighed a hefty 207 kg when he decided he had enough of being fat. So, he went to the University Department of Medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Dundee and told them he wanted to stop eating altogether.
Doctors were happy to let him try fasting and gave him multivitamins, potassium, sodium, and yeast to make sure he didn’t get too weak from not eating.
Angus kept this fast going for 385 days, only drinking black tea, black coffee, or soda water. Instead of using up the calories he ate, his body used up the fat it had stored.

Doctors regularly checked Angus’s blood sugar to ensure his health wasn’t in danger. And a year and 17 days later, he had reached his ideal weight of 81 kg.
By then, Angus had forgotten entirely what food tasted like. He broke his fast with a hard-boiled egg and a piece of bread. Afterwards, he told reporters, “I liked my egg, and I’m full.”
He gained a few more kilogrammes over the years, but he never got to the point where he was obese again. He died in 1990. But even though it worked for Angus, fasting for a long time can be very dangerous.
Angus was lucky because the only thing he was burning was fat. Organ failure and heart problems are often caused by fasting.
