According to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner, Anne Heche died from inhalation and heat injuries, and a final autopsy and toxicology analysis found “no evidence of impairment by illicit substances” at the time of her fatal automobile crash.
Inactive cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine was detected in Heche’s system, as stated in the coroner’s report, which was seen by EW. Heche’s earlier marijuana use was confirmed by the presence of cannabinoids in a urine sample, but not in a blood sample taken at the time of the accident.

After the accident, Heche was taken to the hospital, where tests revealed the presence of fentanyl in her system; it was later found that she had received the narcotic as a pain treatment. Heche’s system showed no signs of alcohol consumption.
The initial blood test results showed the presence of narcotics in Heche’s blood, prompting an inquiry and raising the possibility of DUI charges in the wake of the incident. Since then, medical care has been attributed to those cases.
She was just 53 years old when she crashed her automobile into a Los Angeles home in August, igniting a fire that ultimately claimed her life. Burns covered her face, neck, shoulder, chest, and upper limbs from being locked in her car for half an hour before rescuers freed her. There were signs of hypoxic injury in her brain as a result of the lack of oxygen she was exposed to when she was locked in the car.
According to the coroner’s report, Heche’s smoke inhalation was exacerbated by a fracture in her sternum, which made it more difficult for her to maintain a healthy oxygen intake. Heche stayed on life support for a while after she was certified brain dead on August 11, so that the OneLegacy Foundation could identify a suitable organ donor. She was in a coma for a few days. Heche was found to be a match, and on August 14 her life support was turned off.
The accident has not ended the legal dispute over Heche’s fortune. According to court documents obtained by EW, Lynne Mishele is suing Heche for at least $2 million, citing negligence, infliction of emotional distress, and trespass after narrowly escaping physical harm after Heche slammed into her home.
