Authorities are continuing their investigation into a homemade explosive device discovered at a grocery store.

It was discovered in the parking lot of the Grocery Outlet on Tuesday, and the Lakeport Police Department said it is continuing its investigation into what it described as a homemade explosive device.

A report of an improvised explosive device was discovered in the parking lot of the Grocery Outlet at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Lakeport Police Department and the Lakeport Fire Protection District. Officers and firefighters from both agencies responded.

Officers determined that the device was discovered under a customer’s vehicle in the parking lot by officers.

Officials have stated that they are currently investigating the circumstances of when and how the device was implanted.

A Lakeport Police sergeant who had been trained in explosive recognition determined that the device was made of a cardboard tube and contained powder, shrapnel, and a fuse, among other components.

According to the police, the sergeant determined that the device would not explode on its own and could be packaged safely for transport to a remote location where we could render it safe before releasing it.

They moved the device to the City of Lakeport Municipal Sewer District Property, which is located west of the city, where they put it in a secure location and conducted a thorough investigation for evidence purposes.
