The American crime comedy-drama series Backstrom ran on television from January 22 to April 30, 2015. Hart Hanson adapted the series of Swedish books by Leif G. W. Persson into it. Filming for the series took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, even though it is set in Portland, Oregon.
After only one season, Fox decided to discontinue the show on May 8, 2015. Everett Backstrom (Rainn Wilson) is the show’s protagonist; he’s an “overweight, offensive, irascible” cop who works with a group of offbeat criminologists and is constantly at war with his “self-destructive” impulses.
Backstrom Season 2 Storyline
Officer Everett Backstrom, a lieutenant in the police department, has no filter. For his inflammatory behavior, he was banished to the traffic division for five years, but now he’s back in the spotlight as the head of Portland’s brand-new Special Crimes Unit. Despite his destructive tendencies, he is tasked with solving the city’s most delicate and critical crimes.
It should be no surprise that Backstrom’s homecoming has been met with a chilly reception, especially from Police Chief Anna Cervantes. Detective Nicole Gravely, the upbeat and determined yin to Backstrom’s yang, runs the S.C.U.’s day-to-day operations and goes above and beyond to offset his erratic and divisive ways. Detective Sergeant John Almond is at her side, a seasoned Bureau veteran who disagrees with Backstrom’s xenophobic antics and sees only the worst in him, despite his efforts to see the best in others.
Sergeant Peter Niedermayer, the group’s forensics liaison, is a gorgeous, free-thinking, philosophical man whose open approach to the cosmos completely irritates Backstrom. Nadia Paquet, a stunning French immigrant with an exceptional facility with cyberspace, is in charge of the chain of evidence at S.C.U. Headquarters. She develops feelings for Backstrom and fulfills the “make a friend” requirement of Backstrom’s doctor.
Frank Moto, a uniformed police officer, demonstrates his worth on the street by subduing the culprits and deftly avoiding dangerous situations. Meanwhile, Backstrom’s tenant, decorator, and underworld connection, Gregory Valentine, has genuine affection for the harsh cop. Backstrom is less than adept at adapting to the progressive sensibilities of 21st-century Portland. Yet, he can always use his dark instincts and strange powers to outsmart his enemies, deceive his peers, and solve the case with the support of his wacky squad.
In the surprisingly moving season finale of “Backstrom,” titled “Rock Bottom,” things hit a low point when Backstrom learned that the prime suspect in a murder was his Sheriff father, Blue (Robert Forster). Is it more likely that Backstrom will let sleeping dogs lie than that he will confront his father about the crime? What would it cost, if anything, if he did succeed? If you’ve seen the show, you probably have a good idea of the possible solutions.
The story began, ironically, with Backstrom finally being called out by his doctor, Deb Chaman (Rizwan Manji), for lying about his progress, or lack thereof. Chaman told Backstrom that he was revoking his previously cleared physical results and recommending that Backstrom be suspended indefinitely after the player showed traces of alcohol and tobacco in his system, despite producing a chip to prove his sobriety.
Moto shows in at the last second with a case, but Chaman warns him that it’s his only chance to get his hands on one. It’s possible he’s right (especially considering the show’s lackluster reception). Backstrom is so happy that he thanks a higher power, albeit in his unique way, when he gets to the crime scene, and it appears that the likely lead suspect would be Captain Rocha (Adam Beach), alias Amy’s current beau. Interestingly, this would not be the last time he did anything like this in this episode.
Unfortunately, Backstrom has made an incorrect assumption; the deceased was an informant working for Rocha, who was killed during a botched drug deal. Rocha, though, remains uncooperative, and Backstrom is ultimately able to place him under arrest on charges of obstructing justice. Rocha gives in and reveals that the informant’s final words were the story’s namesake. When Backstrom realizes, this is a physical location and not simply an emotion. He is pleased since he believes his father, Blue, maybe the true villain.

His role as “U-Turn” in the Showtime series Weeds and his portrayal of Radon Randell in the Spike sports comedy series Blue Mountain State has made him a household name.
