The anticipated live-action DC Comics film, Batgirl, has been cancelled. According to an exclusive story from The Wrap, Warner Bros. has killed the $90 million (about Rs. 708 crore) movie. The movie Batgirl, which was in the last stages of post-production, was supposed to be out this year. However, DC Films has since changed its mind and decided not to release it in theatres or on the HBO Max streaming platform. Leslie Grace plays Barbara Gordon, the title character, in the film.
The decision by Warner Bros., according to a statement to The Wrap, was a “strategic move” and had nothing to do with Grace’s portrayal of Batgirl. Leslie Grace is an extraordinarily gifted actor, and this choice does not reflect on how she performed. However, according to a story from The New York Post, Batgirl underwent a test screening and received a poor rating. One of their top sources described the movie as “irredeemable.” Additionally, Warner Bros. has made the decision to shelve Scoob! Holiday Haunt, the follow-up to the 2020 CGI film that briefly discusses Shaggy’s youth. In an effort to save money, neither of the movies will now be released. Insiders assert that under the new strategy being implemented by David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, big-budget streaming movies no longer make financial sense.
When Joss Whedon (The Avengers) was chosen to write and direct Batgirl, the project was still in its conceptual beginnings. With Whedon’s departure, the film quickly entered a state of limbo, paving the way for Chistina Hodson (Birds of Prey) to take over as the screenwriter in 2019. In the end, the project was taken on by the directing team of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, and it had already into the post-production phase when Warner Bros. decided to effectively put it on hold. Grace played the title vigilante on the now-cancelled Batgirl, while J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Brendan Fraser (The Mummy), Michael Keaton (Birdman), returning his role as Batman from the 1990s, and Jacob Scipio as Anthony Bressi.
