She was born Bleta Rexha was born on August 30, 1989, in Brooklyn, New York. Flamur Rexha, her father, was born in Debar, Albania, and came to the United States when he was 21 years old. Rexha learned to play the piano and guitar on her own as a child and also trumpet as a child. She went to Staten Island’s Tottenville High School, where she became involved in both the choir and the musical theatre program. At the age of 16, Rexha sent in an entry to be performed at the Grammy Day event hosted by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. In 2010, Rexha began working with Pete Wentz at a New York City recording studio where the two had met. She joined the band and took over vocal duties for Wentz’s side project Black Cards.
