Brittney And Cherelle Griner Are Expecting Their First Baby
The news was announced by the June 2019 wedding couple on Saturday, April 13, in a shared Instagram post.
“Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being.” Cherelle wrote, accompanied by a picture of the 33-year-old WNBA player and her spouse holding hands next to an ultrasound of their unborn kid.
Using the hashtags “#BabyGrinerComingSoon” and “#July2024,” she also revealed that the baby is coming in July.
Though they didn’t begin dating until years later, the couple’s wonderful news has been anticipated for a long time. They originally met more than ten years ago when attending Baylor University from 2009 to 2013.
Almost a year after Brittney proposed to Cherelle, the expectant parents exchanged vows in June 2019.
Then, in February 2022, Brittney’s arrest for drug charges in Russia—where she was scheduled to play in an off-season basketball game—turned the couple’s life upside down. Following weeks of trial and months of detention in Russia, the WNBA player received a nine-year prison sentence.
“I’m like, in no world would I ever [have] thought, you know, our president and a foreign nation’s president would be sitting down having to discuss the freedom of my wife,” Cherelle said in response to the verdict in an interview with CBS Mornings after the sentence.
At the time, she remarked, “It terrifies me because sometimes those situations in movies don’t end well and sometimes they never get their person back.”
Fortunately, Cherelle was able to reunite with her partner, when Brittney was finally released in December 2022. Brittney is also currently working on a memoir detailing her arrest and detainment in a Russian prison.

After learning that her wife was finally returning home after a months-long experience, Cherelle opened up about her relief upon Brittney’s release.
She said at the time, “I had thought about that moment a thousand times, and I thought I would be full of tears. But I was overwhelmingly happy. It was the first time I was able to finally exhale, and I’m like, ‘Oh, thank God, this is such a great day.’ “
The law school graduate added that she is spending a lot of time getting back in touch with Brittney while they both rebuild their lives.
She said, “It’s unfortunate that those 10 months happened without us being able to be side-by-side. But it happened, and we’re embracing the fact that we now get to learn each other’s story through that time. So we’re taking it slow. We are not doing it all at once. But we are honoring the fact that I went through something that was really hard and difficult without BG’s awareness, and vice versa.”
She said, “Day by day, we’re just feeding a little bit to the soul and understanding each other’s journey so we can actually start walking together.”
