According to Boxer, a neurosurgeon will look for “what we can treat,” such as a vitamin B-12 shortage or a thyroid imbalance. A speech therapist works with the patient once the underlying issue has been diagnosed and treated to help the patient restore as much of their previous speech abilities as feasible.
According to the National Aphasia Association, if a person has primary progressive aphasia (PPA), their inability to speak is a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, and “additional issues linked with the underlying disease, such as memory loss, generally come later.”
