The driver of a school bus that was not carrying any students was hurt early on Wednesday morning in Forest Hills after the bus collided with a steel structure, leaving the front end of the bus in a twisted heap and wrapped around the welcome sign for the borough.

Allegheny County police reported that the bus driver, who was alone in the vehicle because there were no pupils on board, was stuck and needed to be freed by emergency personnel. The collision took place in the 2300 block of Ardmore Boulevard shortly after 9:30 in the morning.

The driver was sent to the hospital, where his condition was reported to be stable. KDKA-TV, a news partner of the Post-Gazette, reported that the driver sustained significant injuries.

According to the officials, the bus had just finished dropping off pupils at a facility belonging to the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Witness Kenny Ferree told KDKA that the driver appeared to be conscious while being “sort of rattled up.” Ferree was referring to the motorist’s condition after the accident. “I was able to get the most distance between us by crawling up into the ruins. He had blood coming from his head.

“I put his head back, removed my shirt, and wrapped it around his head while holding him. Then I put my shirt back on.”

The investigation is being conducted by the county police’s collision reconstruction officers. Please contact the police at the following number if you have any information regarding the collision: 833-225-8477.
