Cal Wilson, a comedian who was known for her quick wit and sharp observations, passed away at the age of 53 following a brief illness. Wilson’s management has confirmed that she passed away at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Wilson was known for her roles on Spicks and Specks and Good News Week.
The comic spent 20 years performing regularly on the New Zealand comedy circuit before relocating to Australia in 2003. She got her own Netflix comedy special and appeared in the festival 14 times. When Wilson was brought to the hospital, she was serving as a co-host on The Great Australian Bake Off.
Wilson was “surrounded by love” when she passed away, according to her close friend and fellow comedian Damian Callinan, who spoke to the ABC about it.
“It was a short illness. It was a mystery illness, and they didn’t know what it was until it was too late, basically,” he told ABC Statewide Drive Victoria.
Callinan was “very grateful” to be able to say his final goodbyes to Wilson and her family yesterday.
“She was surrounded by love when she left, and her love continues to spread around the country and the world,” he said.
During the COVID-19 quarantines, Wilson kept in touch with her online audience by posting photos of extravagant headdresses.
The Packing Room Prize at the 2023 Archibald Prize went to a portrait of her sporting a headpiece constructed of doll parts and Christmas ornaments.
