Following the disclosure of internal IRS data showing that the government gave government COVID stimulus checks totaling at least $1.3 billion to more than 1.1 million prisoners, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) issued a statement. Senate Democrats defeated Cassidy’s amendment to forbid these payments from going to prisoners in March 2021.
He claimed that Senate Democrats thwarted Dr. Cassidy’s attempt to prevent one million prisoners from receiving government-funded checks. “The IRS report is evidence that the reckless $1.9 trillion spending bill passed by Washington Democrats contributed to inflation. A prisoner serving a life sentence for the murder of two people, a prisoner serving a 30-year sentence for giving a 23-year-old a fatal dose of heroin, a prisoner serving a 20-year sentence for giving a 21-year-old woman a deadly dose of fentanyl, and a prisoner in Florida doing a punishment for sex trafficking are all examples of prisoners receiving stimulus checks.
