As expected, the talented Game of Thrones cast and expert storytellers of the show inspired numerous spinoffs and prequels after the show ended in 2019. The prequel, House of the Dragon, will soon be released, and it will include several key Targaryen figures who have never been seen before. A sequel series is also currently in production.
The House of the Dragon features such a massive star cast, that I am sure you will recognize at least a few of the actors from earlier works. If you’re wondering where you’ve seen these actors or actresses before, here are some of the most well-known projects, before they arrived in Westeros.

Paddy Considine, (King Viserys Targaryen)
King Viserys Targaryen, played by Paddy Considine in House of the Dragon, is up first. Considine is a Hollywood veteran who has been in a wide variety of films over the years, including A Room for Romeo Brass, Last Resort, In America, My Summer of Love, Doctor Sleep, 24 Hour Party People, and Dead Man’s Shoes.
Considine’s TV work has also been well awarded. So far, his most notable roles have been in the third season of Peaky Blinders and other TV shows like The Outsider, The Third Day, Red Riding, Informer, and The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher.
Matt Smith (Prince Daemon Targaryen)
Next is Matt Smith. In House of the Dragon, he plays Daemon Targaryen. Smith might be best known for his role as The Doctor on Doctor which has become one of the most popular ones in the show’s history. He is also well known for his Prince Phillip Character which he portrayed in The Crown Cast.
Smith has been in a lot of movies and shows, in addition to his well-known roles on TV. Some of his most famous roles were in Morbius, Womb, Terminator: Genisys, and the 2021 thriller Last Night in Soho. He has also been in a lot of other movies. He also had a part in a TV show called Party Animals.
Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower)
Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower on House of the Dragon, is no stranger to the screen. Cooke starred as the lead in both the Vanity Fair miniseries and the horror TV show Bates Motel. She also appeared in an episode of Modern Family.
Cooke has appeared in a wide variety of films, from the scary movie Ouija to Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, The Limehouse Golem, Thoroughbreds, Ready Player One, and Sound of Metal, and dozens more.

Emma D’Arcy (Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen)
In my opinion, no one will ever be able to top Daenerys Targaryen, but Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D’Arcy in House of the Dragon, comes close. D’Arcy’s film and television career are just getting started, but she’s already had roles in films like Misbehavior and Mothering Sunday.
Additionally, she was a main cast member on the TV shows Wanderlust, Wild Bill, Hanna, and Truth Seekers.
Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon
Lord Corlys Velaryon, or The Sea Snake as he is more popularly called, is played by Steve Toussaint, who is next on the least list. Toussaint has appeared in many films, such as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Judge Dredd, Shooting Dogs, and Flight of Fury.
Toussaint has also made numerous guest appearances on television shows. Shows like Doctors, CSI: Miami, New Tricks, Skins (a teen drama), Line of Duty, Lewis, the Tut miniseries, Death in Paradise, and many more fall into this category.
Eve Best (Princess Rhaenys Targaryen)
Another Targaryen has arrived. House of the Dragon stars Eve Best, a veteran of both film and television, as Rhaenys Targaryen. Films like “The King’s Speech” (for which she won an Oscar), “Someone You Love,” “United,” and “A Woman of No Importance” feature among her most notable roles.
Best has also been quite successful on television, starring in both Nurse Jackie and the Netflix original series Fate: The Winx Saga. She has appeared on shows such as The Shadow Line, The Honorable Woman, and more in supporting roles.
House of the Dragon’s Fabien Frankel.
Next up is Fabien Frankel, who plays Ser Criston Cole in House of the Dragon. With only Last Christmas as his filmography, Frankel is a newcomer to the industry (which, funnily enough, starred Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys in Game of Thrones).
Frankel has had a number of TV roles, including in The Serpent and the TV movie NYPD Blue, but his upcoming role in House of the Dragon is expected to be his most prominent to date.
Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria)
Sonoya Mizuno, who plays Maria in House of the Dragon, has been in a number of other fantastic films and television shows. She has starred in several notable films, including the sci-fi film Annihilation and the critically acclaimed film Ex Machina. She also appeared in supporting capacities in the Oscar-winning romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians and the Oscar-winning musicals La La Land and Beauty and the Beast.
Mizuno has also been successful on television, with starring roles in the original Netflix series Maniac and the original Hulu series Devs, both of which starred Nick Offerman.
Rhys Ifans in House of the Dragon.
Rhys Ifans, who has found success in film and television, plays Otto Hightower. Even though I am most familiar with Ifans for his role as Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part 1, I must admit that he has an impressive filmography. Notting Hill, Enduring Love, Kev & Perry Go Large, The King’s Man, and The Five-Year Engagement are just a few of the films in which he has had a major role.
When Ifans played the villainous Lizard in both The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man: No Way Home, he became a household name.
Ifans has also worked extensively in television, appearing in shows like Elementary and Berlin Station and even narrating the film Sali Mali. As of the second season of Temple, he was also a cast member.
Milly Alcock (Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen)
Having discussed the older Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, we will now examine Milly Alcock’s portrayal of the younger version of the character in House of the Dragon. The young actress has become well-known thanks to her work on television rather than on the big screen.
Pine Gap, Fighting Season, A Place to Call Home, Upright, Reckoning, and The Gloaming are just some of the shows in which these actors have appeared. What she’ll do next is anyone’s guess.
Emily Carey in House of the Dragon.
Alicent Hightower, played by Emily Carey, was first introduced as an older character in House of the Dragon. She has done a few movies and was the young Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. Her other roles include Anastasia in Anastasia: Once Upon a Time and a young Wendy Darling in The Lost Girls.
Grace Beauchamp on the British drama series Casualty was her most notable role, but she has also guest-starred on getting Even on Netflix and made appearances in Houdini and Doyle.
Even though there are many more people in House of the Dragon, these are the ones you’ll be seeing the most. I know you can’t wait to see what they accomplish in the future and what they bring to the table with their new HBO series.
