During a ceremony on Sunday night, November 20, 2022, Lionel Richie was given the AMA Icon Award. Smokey Robinson, who has been a close friend of Richie’s for many years, gave him the award. Richie is 73 years old.
Richie thanked his kids and coworkers as he accepted the award. He also made sure to talk to the “young superstars” in the room so he could give them advice.
Richie said that the spotlight only shines on special people, who should be grateful for it. “When you hear the word “hip,” you should think of today. When you hear the word “inspiring,” it means “always.” If you ever see that light, think about what God has in store for you.”
After the singer, who is 73, finished his speech, his close friend Stevie Wonder and Charlie Puth took the stage to perform in honour of the legend.
Wonder and Puth chose hits from the Commodores and Richie’s solo singles that were at the top of the charts for the performance. The nice duet, which Puth called a “musical tennis match of Lionel Richie copyright,” was made of great works of art.

The two each played a small piece of a Lionel Richie hit, showing his influence over the years. Wonder sang hits like “Three Times a Lady,” “All Night Long (All Night),” “Brick House,” and “Jesus Is Love.”
Puth, on the other hand, was in charge of songs like “Easy” and “Say You, Say Me.” Robinson, Melissa Etheridge, Ari Lennox, Jimmie Allen, Yola, Dustin Lynch, and Muni Long joined them later to sing “We Are the World” again.
Lionel couldn’t help himself, so he jumped on stage and joined.
Rolling Stone says Richie is only the second person after Rihanna to win the Icon Award at the American Music Awards. Richie has won 17 American Music Awards. His charity single “We Are the World,” which topped the charts and was co-written by him, was performed by a group of all-star artists at the 1987 AMAs.
