It was not immediately clear how old she was or what caused her death. Kershaw’s mother took him in after his parent’s divorce when he was 10 years old, and he grew up in a Dallas suburb. Christopher Kershaw, his father, passed away in 2013.

At the dedication, Ellen Kershaw remarked, “Clayton grew up with a baseball in his hand, ready to play a game in a sandlot or on a ballfield just like this one at a moment’s notice.”
“One person in particular cultivated that love in Clayton, his dear momma Marianne, who moved mountains to get him to baseball practice and games. She sat front row cheering him on not so subtly and kept score in a book to keep her nerves at bay.”
Astute observer Ellen Kershaw chimed in, “She experienced no greater joy than watching her son grow into the man, the philanthropist, the father, and the ballplayer that he is today.”
Four children have been born to Kershaw and his wife. On Sunday, before the game, he joined two of them on the field to play catch. Kershaw will start Tuesday night at home against the Minnesota Twins, as announced by manager Dave Roberts on Sunday.
“I’m sure this is a day that he has a heavy heart,” Roberts said on Mother’s Day. “When you’re dealing with the passing of a parent, that’s up there as tough as it gets.”
After his start, Roberts mentioned the possibility of the 35-year-old pitcher taking bereavement leave.
