Roman’s friend and booking agent Alison Chaplin confirmed on Sunday that he passed away on Saturday at Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach, Florida. Roman gained notoriety for his performances in Catskill Mountain hotels and resorts, which were also known as the Borscht Belt due to the huge Jewish population that frequented the area and the comedians who entertained them, including Mel Brooks and Don Rickles. Roman Kirschenbaum’s family helped him develop an early interest in stand-up comedy. He was born Fred Kirschenbaum on May 28, 1937, in Newark, New Jersey, and reared in Jamaica, Queens. Roman began emceeing at the age of 15 at the Crystal Spring Hotel in the Catskills, which belonged to his uncle and grandfather.

Roman made comments in “Catskills on Broadway” regarding everything from his upbringing in Queens to his “retirement life” in Florida. Roman joked, “I took a cholesterol test. 911 called me back on my number. In their 1991 review of the program, The New York Times noted that “Catskill resorts may be struggling with the recession, but Catskill humor has not lost its flair.”

He’d subsequently claim that the show had transformed his life. Roman performed for many more years when it went to Broadway and began touring the nation. He was also appointed Dean of the New York City Friars Society, where he served as a mentor to numerous aspiring comics and helped to fill the exclusive club with new talent.

In 2003, Jeffrey Ross, one of those young comedians, stated of Roman, “When I was becoming a member, there weren’t many of us who were younger. But Freddie was a wonderful sweetheart who often came around to hang out with me and my buddies. Roman was the ideal comedian to represent humor, according to Capri in the same interview. He is the global social director, according to Capri. And he enjoys every minute of it.

He didn’t anticipate the stint to extend as long as it did. Roman made light of his term, saying, “Eleven years ago, I was elected president for a two-year term. I resemble Fidel Castro in terms of comedians. Lifetime presidency for me. Larry King succeeded him in 2014.
