The worker was standing next to a construction pickup truck on the shoulder of southbound U.S. 27 and Frank Jarrell Road in Lake County at about 7:29 a.m.
That’s when a passing semi left the roadway and sideswiped the pickup truck, pinning the worker between the vehicles, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The semi then left the scene.
Troopers said the construction pickup was “well off the roadway.”
Luciano Angeles, 36, of Lakeland was in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center. A passenger in the construction truck, 38-year-old Hector Olivera of Lakeland, was not injured.
Witnesses described the semi as red and hauling a trailer. It should have damage on the right, front and lower right side of the cab and is owned by A-1 Concrete US LLC of Lakeland, FHP said.
Charges are pending.
