Khayla Evans, a 24-year-old Texas woman from Grand Prairie, was discovered dead in her cell at the Lake County Jail on Friday afternoon. According to a news statement from the coroner’s office, Evans had preexisting medical issues, and an autopsy conducted on Monday indicated no apparent fatal injuries. Toxicology and further microbiology testing will be done to identify the precise cause of death.

According to a news statement from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, a correctional guard discovered Evans unconscious in her detention cell at around 2:30:09 on Friday. Her chest was not rising, so the correctional officer opened the cell door immediately to check her pulse. According to the news release, Evans, who was in custody on suspicion of aggravated violence against a child, had no pulse. Until paramedics came, the correctional staff treated the detainee using automated external defibrillation (AED) and CPR.

After being transported to Vista East Medical Center, she was later declared dead. The woman, who had been detained since July 1, 2022, was found unfit to face trial by the courts. According to authorities, the jail was holding her until a spot opened up at the Illinois Department of Human Services so that she could be sent there and receive therapy for fitness restoration.

According to authorities, she was put in a single-inmate pod, and there were no other prisoners in cells close by when she died. She appeared refined and had no suspicious markings or injuries on her body when authorities conducted their rounds 30 minutes before discovering her unconscious in her cell. The news announcement stated that the prisoner had some underlying medical issues. Her cause of death is being looked into by the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, and an autopsy will be done by the Lake County Coroner’s Office on Monday.
