The 73-year-old grandpa who was killed after being struck head-on by another, presumably intoxicated vehicle on Route 59 close to Lake Villa has been recognized by the coroner. According to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek, an autopsy conducted on Monday revealed that George Giannakakis, 73, of Ingleside, died as a result of blunt force trauma.
Around 9:50 p.m. on Friday, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Lake Villa Fire Protection District responded to a report of a car crash with injuries on Route 59 south of Route 132 in unincorporated Lake Villa. According to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli, when sheriff’s deputies arrived, they discovered a GMC Acadia and a Kia Sorento with significant damage.
According to an initial inquiry, the GMC, which was being driven by a 74-year-old Lake Villa man, was heading north on Route 59. For an unknown reason, the GMC’s driver entered the southbound lanes of traffic, according to Covelli. Critical injuries were sustained by both drivers when they were taken by EMS to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Giannakakis was pronounced dead not long after getting to the hospital, according to Covelli. The GMC’s driver is still in severe condition at the hospital. According to Covelli, witnesses claimed the GMC was swerving before the collision. Covelli continued, “Impairment looks to be a component in the incident, but the inquiry is still open.

According to Giannakakis’ obituary, he is survived by his wife of 52 years, three children, and several grandchildren. A visitation is conducted on Wednesday, and a funeral ceremony is performed on Thursday morning. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team is still looking into the collision.
