The Delaware State Police will be at William Penn High School until next week to look into why a gun was fired inside the building on Tuesday, the school district said.
In the incident at Delaware’s biggest high school, no one was hurt, but the Colonial School District said Tuesday night that the school would be closed so that investigators could “carry out a thorough investigation.”
The school will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday because Friday is a day for teachers to work on their skills and students didn’t have any classes on that day. Classes will start back up on Tuesday, which is the day after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
The district said in a statement that all before- and after-school activities, sports, and events planned for Wednesday and Thursday will be moved to a later date. “The safety of staff and students is still our top priority. This break gives officials time to do a thorough investigation and gives everyone time to calm down after what happened today.”
Students who are worried about their mental health should call the National Mental Health Hotline at (800) 969-4357 or dial 988. The district said that when students go back to school on Tuesday, there will be counselors and “extra support” for any students who may need it.
“We are sad that this bad thing happened, but we are glad that no one was hurt and that students and staff responded quickly to the safety rules that had been set up. We’ll get through these scary times together and let our families know what’s going on.”

The lockdown lasted for 80 minutes
According to the district’s website, the high school was put on lockdown just after 11:30 a.m., while state police officers looked into a report of a possible gunshot in the area.
The Colonial website said Tuesday afternoon, “This means that students are back to normal inside and are sheltering in place in the classrooms they are already in.”
The lockdown ended about 80 minutes later, at 12:50 p.m. when the website said it did.
When troopers got to the school at 713 E. Basin Road, which is near New Castle, they began their investigation. When police looked around the outside of the school, they found a handgun.
The 2 p.m. dismissal didn’t seem any different from any other day, except for the fact that there were several police cars there.
Several marked police cars were parked close to the building as students walked out on foot. Some jumped into cars that were already there, while others went on into nearby neighborhoods. Some students left in cars, while others took school buses.
As of Tuesday afternoon, no one had been charged in the incident, according to the Delaware State Police.
