Disney’s self-governing authority is eliminated, and a state board now has jurisdiction over the media behemoth, thanks to a bill that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law on Monday.
DeSantis claimed at a news conference held at a firehouse minute from Disney World that “they’ve enjoyed privileges since the 1960s unlike any firm or individual in the state of Florida has ever had.”
“They were exempt from rules that applied to everyone else. They were able to receive substantial benefits without contributing fairly to taxation.” DeSantis instructed everyone present to check their watches before signing the bill so they would know “when time the corporate monarchy came to an end.”
He queried how one theme park could have its own government while the other parks were treated differently. “Thus, we think that was bad policy. Being inseparable from this one California-based corporation, in our opinion, was neither rational nor sustainable.”
