As the new surgeon general of California, Dr. Diana Ramos, a former president of the Orange County Medical Association, will be in charge of the state’s public health initiatives. The position was formed in 2019 by Governor Gavin Newsom, who made the appointment public on Thursday, August 25.
Ramos expressed her commitment to a “healthier, more equitable future” for California in a statement that was uploaded to the website of the Office of the California Surgeon General on Thursday afternoon. Ramos, who is from Laguna Beach, said, “I am very aware that while we are all Californians, our experiences differ tremendously.
Many of us are struggling with poverty, mental illness, trauma, sorrow, homelessness, addiction, racism, attacks on our bodies and our personal choices, and other issues. And although though it has undoubtedly been difficult for all of us, I see this as a chance to continue the positive work that California is recognized for. Ramos was complimented by Newsom for her ability to concentrate on women’s, mental health, and gun violence concerns.
According to a statement from Newsom, “California’s Surgeon General has a key role in advancing focused solutions to attack the causes of our most serious health concerns and injustices.” “Dr. Ramos is a prominent leader in medicine and a renowned authority on public health who offers a lifetime of experience preserving and advancing the health of vulnerable communities.”
