The BBC has been airing the British science fiction program Doctor Who since its debut in 1963. The show follows the exploits of a Time Lord named the Doctor, an alien who can pass for humans. The Doctor’s spaceship, the TARDIS, can travel through time and space.
The TARDIS has the appearance of a blue British police box, which was a familiar sight in Britain in 1963 when the series was the first broadcast. The Doctor and his friends fight off enemies, try to save civilizations, and aid those in need.
There have been thirteen prominent cast members since William Hartnell’s debut in 1963; in 2017, Jodie Whittaker made history by becoming the first woman to play the Doctor on television. The plot device of regeneration into a new incarnation, in which a Time Lord “transforms” into a new body when the current one is too seriously damaged to heal naturally, explains the change from one actor to another.
