An Italian greyhound is believed to have contracted monkeypox from people after sharing a bed with his infected owners. Twelve days after his owners developed monkeypox, the four-year-old dog developed lesions, “including abdominal pustules,” according to the medical journal The Lancet. Although monkeypox has been proven to be carried by wild animals, this is the first instance of an infection in a domesticated animal that has been documented.
Dogs are now listed among the animals that can contract the monkeypox virus, according to updated advice from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Following the discovery of the first case of a pet dog suspected of catching the virus from its owners and being reported in France, the CDC made changes to its advice.
Researchers reported that they had discovered proof of monkeypox transmission from humans to dogs in a publication that appeared last week in The Lancet medical magazine. It was unclear before to that if the virus might infect dogs. …The researchers demanded more research on the transmission of secondary monkeypox by pets.

Our results should stimulate discussion regarding the necessity of isolating pets from monkeypox virus-positive individuals, the authors said. The CDC advises that those who have monkeypox stay away from animals and that pets that have not been exposed to the virus be looked after by friends or family at another residence until the owner or owners have fully recovered.
