Based on the original American version of the show, RuPaul’s Drag Race in the UK is a British reality competition series. The BBC and World of Wonder co-produced television series debuted on October 3, 2019. This is the fourth season of the Drag Race series and RuPaul’s second time hosting the series. Season 1 of the show, titled “UK’s First Drag Superstar,” follows RuPaul and a panel of judges as they seek “the United Kingdom’s next drag superstar.”
Each week, the participants are given a new challenge to complete, and RuPaul serves as host, mentor, and chief judge. The show also has a judging panel consisting of RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Alan Carr, and Graham Norton. The UK version of RuPaul’s Drag Race was renewed for a second season in November 2019.
Drag Race UK Season 4 Storyline
We begin with Veronica Green’s return, with her face completely covered in green makeup, following a brief highlight video containing some of the best moments from UK Season 2. Fans of the second UK season will recall that Veronica was kicked from the show after she contracted COVID-19 days before production resumed. Even though she was extended a standing invitation to return, she initially seemed ambivalent about accepting it. Due to her lack of commitment, I wondered whether she wouldn’t return.
After seeing her again, I understand. Although Veronica’s new introduction is more polished than her previous one, it still doesn’t offer much fresh information. She hasn’t had time to tour or perform live like All Stars queens like Eureka! and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, or even returning queens like herself. Due to this season’s early start of production, Veronica had limited time to spend outside of confinement between the two halves. Because of her immune system, this person is starting again from scratch, and it’s not her fault.
She expresses confidence about being on the other girls’ level this time, but I worry that she has lost a significant edge in Season 2: the element of surprise. The first time around, Veronica surprised us by exceeding our expectations; this time, we knew what to anticipate. With other singers and actors in the group, she’ll need to show that she can do something different. It must be challenging to play the queen who dreams of appearing in Wicked on the West End when your castmate has performed in the role.
After Veronica is out of the way, we’re given good setups for the rest of the gals, including Ella, the reigning theatre queen. Kitty Scott-Claus (with the “claws” in “Claus” pronounced, the name sounds like “Kitty’s Got Claws”) is a pop culture guru with a commanding stage presence. Vanity Milan has only been performing in drag for a year, but she has a fantastic amount of polish and her husband creates all of her costumes. Chorizo May, the first Spanish queen on the show, responds simply to inquiries about why she is competing in Drag Race UK: “Listen, Linda, I started doing drag in Newcastle.”
Where Is Drag Race UK Filmed?
Manchester Studios in Manchester is the location of the current filming of Drag Race UK. It was the location of the first general election discussion in 2010, as well as the first broadcast performance by the Beatles in 1962. These studios are the oldest television production facilities in the UK.
