In the Elder Scrolls series of action role-playing games, Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks are principally responsible for the development and publication. An open world and free-form gameplay are hallmarks of this franchise. Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim all won Game of the Year awards from different sites. More than 58 million copies of the series have been sold globally.
Each game in the series takes set on Tamriel, a continent in the series’s fictional universe. The scenario combines pre-medieval real-world features, such as a powerful Roman-like Empire, with high fantasy medieval themes, like restricted technology, widespread magic use, and the existence of many mythological creatures. The continent is split into a variety of provinces populated by humans and popular humanoid fantasy races such as elves, orcs, and anthropomorphic animals. A recurrent theme in the lore is that a chosen hero emerges to combat an approaching threat, usually a malicious creature or an opposing army.

Elder Scrolls Gameplay
The Elder Scrolls games are action role-playing games and feature elements derived from action and adventure games. When a player reaches a certain level in Arena, they level up by defeating enemies (and earning experience points). However, in Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion, the series developed a skill-based approach to character progression. Players develop their characters’ skills by applying them and only level up when a certain set of skills have been developed.
In Skyrim, the more you level up talent, the more it contributes to your character’s leveling. As a result, the emphasis moved from character creation to character growth. The flexibility of the games’ engines has facilitated the release of game extensions (or mods) through The Elder Scrolls Construction Set. The Elder Scrolls main series of games emphasize different aspects of the gaming experience than most role-playing games.
An article from Joystiq in early November 2006 noted a contrast in emphasis between BioWare’s and Bethesda’s creations. Bethesda’s games emphasized “aesthetic presentation and open-ended adventuring,” whereas BioWare emphasized combat and a modular design. Their creators have also taken note of this overarching objective. Creating the first game in this series was driven by Bethesda’s desire to create a setting where players could be and do whatever they wanted, just as in old-school pen-and-paper RPGs.
As stated in the game’s design manifesto, the goal of Daggerfall was to “build a book with blank pages” and “a game meant to inspire discovery and reward curiosity. “Just as in real life,” the player has the option to pursue good or evil through the pathways they choose to take. After a break from similarly epic games, this design tendency resumed with Morrowind, although Joystiq’s previously observed reliance on aesthetics returned.
Bethesda’s workforce was more than tripled during the creation of Morrowind, allowing it to achieve the exact shade of color for its newly handcrafted environment. In their own words, “We knew we had to exceed the visual polish of the other games on the market, and we made it our objective to put The Elder Scrolls back into the vanguard of game innovation.”
Elder Scrolls Plot
There’s not much we can suss out about The Elder Scrolls 6’s tale from the plain landscape view that comprised the teaser video. However, considering how the rest of the series has gone, we can get some notion of where, or rather when, the story is going to take place. As a result of the 201-year gap that separated Oblivion from Skyrim, it’s safe to assume that The Elder Scrolls 6 will also have a time jump following Skyrim’s events.
However, it was implied that Alduin may return one day to fulfill his destiny and destroy the world. Narratively, having Alduin reappear in The Elder Scrolls 6 would be a huge letdown. How would the world of Tamriel be different if The Elder Scrolls 6 took place years after Alduin’s return and his rampage? Seeing how the world and society respond to a disaster like this would be fascinating to observe.

This would offer a new universe of possibilities, as most of Tamriel is built on heavily woven pre-established mythology, but an event like this would tear down most expectations, thereby presenting new players to the franchise with a more approachable plot. If nothing else, we’ve got the confirmation that Shirley Curry, the infamous Skyrim Grandma, will appear as an NPC in The Elder Scrolls 6.
Elder Scrolls Release Date
The release date for The Elder Scrolls 6 has yet to be officially announced. The game may have been formally announced, but there is no timetable for when it will be released. In 2016, famed analyst Michael Pachter optimistically projected that The Elder Scrolls 6 release date will be in 2017, something in which he was immediately mistaken. The Elder Scrolls VI won’t arrive until at least 2026-2027, according to 2021 industry insider Tyler McVicker. For the most part, this can be attributed to the upcoming Starfield in 2023.
Elder Scrolls 6 Trailer
The one piece of official video we have for The Elder Scrolls 6 is the teaser shown at Bethesda’s E3 conference in 2018. There’s not much to see here except the camera floating above a strange province before we are welcomed with the title card.
