After Musk’s purchase of Twitter, some users voiced concern that his support of “free speech” on the site would pave the way for discrimination, insults, and the spread of fake news. Others have voiced disapproval of Musk’s decision to lift bans on high-profile accounts including former President Trump and the satirical website Babylon Bee. He also laid off more than 75% of the workforce and made the remaining employees swear to work harder than ever to transform Twitter.
Due to these and other modifications made by the corporation and the platform, many “hall monitor” journalists have defected to Mastodon, a competing social media network that lets users construct their own tiny social media feeds. In response to a tweet, Musk quipped that he was relieved the negative media had left.
Nate Silver, a founder of FiveThirtyEight, originally penned: “Mastodon appears to be a haven for those with “hall monitor” personalities. In all seriousness, if Elon can get all the hall monitors to switch to Mastodon, that will be his greatest contribution to the betterment of humanity.”

Many journalists and other users have quit Twitter in protest of its new leadership and the fear that it would fail if subjected to too many changes at once. CBS News said on Friday that it was abandoning Twitter because of this “uncertainty,” yet it returned less than 48 hours later. Musk responded to those who claimed Twitter would soon fail in a later message on Tuesday night. Wasn’t Twitter going to go the way of MySpace or something…? he wondered aloud on Twitter.
