A South Florida woman who pretended to be a clairvoyant and her accomplice were both sentenced to federal prison for defrauding a woman out of more than $3 million. Prosecutors claimed that after the victim was no longer able to afford to pay for money-cleansing procedures, the fraud finally came to an end.
In October, Samantha Stevens, a self-described spiritual advisor, received a prison term of two years and six months. According to court documents, Michael Paul Guzman was given a sentence of three years and two months last month. In an agreement with the prosecution, both had admitted to money laundering in federal court in Miami. Stevens, 51, and Guzman, 42, both consented to pay the victim close to $3.2 million in reparations.
In 2012, Stevens met a victim in Miami while posing as a psychic and fortune teller, according to court records. Stevens won the victim’s confidence and persuaded her that she and her family were the targets of a curse. Stevens asserted that in order to break the curse, she had to perform rituals on substantial sums of cash. Prosecutors claim that the woman was warned that doing otherwise would hurt her and her family.
According to police, Stevens and Guzman used the victim’s money to buy cars and homes, and gamble at casinos. After the victim was no longer able to afford the rituals, Stevens cut off contact with the victim in 2016, ending their relationship. Federal law enforcement was notified by the victim after Stevens broke off the relationship.
