FLASHBACK: A Democratic Firm Deleted The Wikipedia Page Of Biden's Incoming Chief Of Staff To Hide His Corporate Past

Prior to Jeff Zients’ nomination as the COVID-19 czar under President Biden in 2021, a Democratic consulting firm removed possibly politically harmful facts from his Wikipedia page.

Zients, the former White House coordinator for the response to the coronavirus, has been under fire from the left for his corporate career and the enormous riches he has amassed in the private sector. He will succeed chief of staff Ron Klain in the coming weeks.

As Zients’ profile grew after he joined the Biden transition team in the summer of 2020, Democratic consulting firm Saguaro Strategies scrubbed such particulars from his Wikipedia page.

At the time, a member of the Saguaro Strategies team confirmed to Politico that the Wikipedia account belonged to the company. According to the page, a prominent Obama adviser at the time named Zients as a Republican, according to a chief executive on the former president’s employment counsel.

That entry is still missing. At the time, some material regarding Zients’ employment with Bain & Company, Portfolio Logic, and Facebook was also removed, but most of it has since been restored.

Liberal detractors of Zients frequently bring up his corporate experience when discussing his Wikipedia page, even though it’s not unusual for someone to have their Wikipedia page cleaned up while vying for a high-profile position.

After it was announced on Twitter on Sunday that Zients would succeed Klain, progressive Twitter users immediately started reposting old articles denouncing him.

Before his return to the private sector, Zients had several posts in the Obama administration, including the National Economic Council director from March 2014 to January 2017. He also held executive positions at The Advisory Board Company and CEB. Additionally, he has collaborated closely with several of Biden’s cabinet members and key aides.

Zients revealed having between $89.3 million and $442.8 million in assets upon joining the current White House as Biden’s COVID-19 czar from early 2021 to April 2022. These assets included various investment funds, real estate properties, and cash shares.

Two liberal think tanks with headquarters in Washington, D.C., the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) and Public Citizen have been outspokenly against Zients’ appointment as COVID czar, criticizing him for not going far enough on mask mandates and for not acting more quickly to ship vaccines abroad.

In March 2022, Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen, remarked, “Jeff Zients failed, and the world paid the price.” His appointment as chief of staff was denounced on Sunday by the CEPR’s Revolving Door Project, which routinely attacks Zients’ riches and corporate past.

The executive director of the Revolving Door Project, Jeff Hauser, stated on Sunday, “Americans are horrified by profiteering in healthcare – Jeff Zients has become amazingly rich by profiteering in healthcare.”

His statement read, “Joe Biden’s best chance to fight for the American people and beat the dark forces threatening our economy is to show actual results via the branch of government he oversees — the executive branch. “For companies to get wealthy, we have long called for a “corporate crackdown” on actions that violate federal law and harm the American people.

Zients have become wealthy as a result of these tactics. We are gravely concerned that Zients would thwart the administration’s righteous exercise of authority on behalf of a people who are already cynical.”

The Revolving Door Project published an article in The American Prospect titled “Fire Jeff Zients” in January 2022, one year into Zients’ tenure leading the White House’s coronavirus response, describing Zients as a “former corporate executive whose track record bolsters the worst possible impulses for a Biden appointee in command of the federal government’s resources.”

A few months later, the project released an essay analyzing Zients’ “business background,” which also looked at his investment company Portfolio Logic LLC, where he was managing partner, when the first speculations about Zients succeeding Klain surfaced.

“When taken as a whole, a look at the businesses that made Zients wealthy reveals a man who used medical providers to profit off the suffering of sick Americans. It appears to have all paid off in the end, “said the report.

It continued, “As speculations circulate that Zients would replace Ronald Klain as Chief of Staff to President Biden, his corporate record raises serious concerns about his suitability to serve in an administration that has made an effort to position itself as a champion of working people.

In a 2015 federal lawsuit, Portfolio Logic, which Zients established, agreed to pay over $7 million to settle claims that a business it had acquired years earlier had submitted false Medicare and Medicaid claims.
