Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man who they say brandished a gun at them Sunday morning after threatening his girlfriend. After nine in the morning, the sheriff’s office received a report about a man brandishing a gun and threatening a woman. The two had argued the day before, according to the woman, and when she awoke, the male was holding a gun toward her.
The suspect was asked to come out of the residence by deputies when they were on the scene in less than five minutes, but he refused, according to the sheriff’s office. Eventually, deputies called the suspect and talked him into going to the window to display his hands. According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect gave deputies permission to enter the house where the victim was trapped and talking to 911 operators in a bedroom.
After the suspect’s mother departed the house during the incident, the deputies broke down a door that was left ajar.
The guy was standing in front of the four deputies when they entered, his hands raised. When the suspect pulled a gun from behind his back, the cops offered verbal orders to defuse the situation, according to the sheriff’s office. He then loaded the gun with a round, pointed it towards the deputy, and fired.
The suspect, eventually identified as Brian Underwood, age 47, who had previously been detained for domestic battery in 2014, was shot and killed by the officers. Deputies have responded to calls involving Underwood in the past for other reported family disturbances, according to the sheriff’s office, but no charges have been made as a consequence.
The four participating deputies are believed to be the victims of an aggravated assault, hence the sheriff’s office has withheld their names of them. Because the female victim was the victim of aggravated domestic violence with a firearm, her identity and address are also being kept a secret.
