According to reports, a substitute teacher in Florida was fired after sharing a video of empty bookcases in a middle school library earlier this week, which Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) referred to as a “false narrative.” On January 27, Brian Covey, a substitute teacher at Mandarin Middle School in Duval County, posted a video of the school’s library’s empty aisles.
He had previously tweeted that “They removed every single book from my children’s classrooms” the day before. The video Covey released was a “false narrative,” according to DeSantis, who claimed that it was not accurate at a press conference on Tuesday. According to First Coast News, Covey said that he was dismissed on Wednesday, over three weeks after posting the original video.
Covey was let go because of his social media remarks, according to a statement from Duval County Public Schools that was initially sent to First Coast News. “It was determined that he had violated the social media and cell phone policies of his employer after a discussion between the district and ESS regarding this individual’s misrepresentation of the books available to students in the school’s library and the disruption this misrepresentation has caused.

As a result, ESS determined that parting ways with this person were necessary due to the policy infractions, according to the statement. According to the website, ESS is a company that hires substitute instructors for Duval County Public Schools.
School officials have been reviewing the books in their libraries since DeSantis recently signed a bill into law requiring public school literature in Florida to be “suited” to the requirements of the kids, age-appropriate for students, and free of pornographic material. The Hill has inquired about comments from DeSantis’ office and Duval County Public Schools.

In a video response to DeSantis’s “false narrative” remarks, Covey said the county had only assessed a small subset of book titles and displayed numerous empty bookshelves. In a tweet, Covey released a video that, according to Duval County Public Schools, only told “less than half the story.” That’s right, the shelves were empty. But, it continued, they were in a room stuffed with books.
