Last week, a Florida woman was rescued for the third time in the past two years from a storm drain. The Delray Beach Police Department said that around noon on Wednesday, officers and firefighters went to help a woman who was swimming in a canal near the 500 block of Lindell Boulevard. The woman may have been in trouble.

The police found the woman, whose name was Lyndsey Jane Kennedy, and asked if she needed help, the department said. They say that Kennedy didn’t care and climbed into a storm drain pipe instead. Police in Delray said that she wouldn’t come out and started to crawl deeper into the culvert pipe, which went under Lindell Boulevard.

Kennedy was held between two pieces of pipe by firefighters while the Delray Beach Fire Rescue Special Operations Team used a ladder and a rescue harness to pull her out. Kennedy seemed to have only minor injuries, and they were taken care of at the scene before he was taken to the hospital for more tests.

After Kennedy went missing for three weeks in March 2021, the fire department rescued her from a storm drain, according to Delray police. Local news outlets reported at the time that Kennedy told police she went swimming in a canal near her boyfriend’s house on March 3, the same night her boyfriend reported her missing.

She said that while swimming, she went through a doorway in a shallow part of the canal and saw a tunnel. She kept going through tunnels until she figured out she was lost. Near the corner of West Atlantic Avenue and SW 11th Avenue, a woman called 911 to say that a woman was yelling for help from inside a drain.

Kennedy was eventually saved. She said she had stopped walking in that area because she could see light and people walking by. At the time, the woman was 43 years old. She told the police that she had been walking through the sewer system for about three weeks. She also said she had been living off an unopened can of ginger ale she had found in the drain while looking for a way out.

Delray police said Kennedy “seemed to understand what was going on” and didn’t need to be Baker Acted (involuntarily institutionalized). Police talked to her mother, who told them she has a history of mental illness, often uses illegal drugs, and has done “weird things” and “made bad decisions” in the past.

Before Kennedy went missing, her family said that she and her mother went to a Bible study where they learned about the prophet Elijah’s journey. The relatives said that Kennedy told her mother in a note that she was going on her own trip. Even so, her family said they didn’t think she was supposed to travel in a storm drain.

She was said to be on the sheriff’s office’s list of missing people as “endangered,” and a detective wrote in the report that she went missing “under similar circumstances” in April 2020. In May 2021, in Grand Prairie, Texas, Kennedy was saved for the third time from a storm drain. Police in the town looked for her for four days before her mother and best friend found her at a canal.

In this case, she was said to have gotten lost after checking into a rehab centre. WPEC says that when the police saw the woman near a creek and went to talk to her, she ran into a nearby storm drain. Her family was able to find her last location before she went underground because she had a tracking app on her phone. People say that her family and friends dropped bags of food and Gatorade into nearby manholes before she was found.

Kennedy was arrested in Florida in July 2021, supposedly because she hit and ran after stealing beer from a gas station and speeding away. She almost hit the store clerk, who chased her outside. Once outside, she ran through several red lights before hitting another car. Palm Beach County deputies said she ran from the scene of the crash to an apartment complex, where she was found by staff.

The injured passenger in Kennedy’s car said she ran away because she didn’t have a driver’s licence. Police said that between 2007 and 2020, her licence had been taken away 17 times.
