Giveon Heartbreak Anniversary: A Story Inspired by a Friend’s Heartbreak’s Trauma

Giveon Heartbreak Anniversary

An American singer-songwriter, Giveon, wrote the song “Heartbreak Anniversary.” It was released as the second single from Take Time, his debut EP, on February 21, 2020. (2020).  A buddy of Giveon’s wrote the downtempo piano ballad, in which he sings about the day of a breakup, remembering and mourning over a relationship that went wrong.

A music video was released, and the song was broadcast to US radio in March of 2021, making it a surprise smash in early 2021. It topped the charts in both Singapore and Malaysia.

On Giveon’s compilation CD, When It’s All Said and Done… Take Time, “Heartbreak Anniversary” was also included. The Recording Industry Association of America has certified the song platinum (RIAA).

An Overview Of The History Behind The Writing-

What inspired Giveon to compose the song “Heartbreak Anniversary” was a conversation with a friend who had broken up with their significant other precisely one year prior.: “I was talking to a friend, and they told me they broke up with their significant other exactly a year ago, and I was like, ‘Oh, alright, I’m going to write a song about that'”.

Giveon said in an interview. Billboard interviewed Giveon on how he deals with the “lovesick” memories he has every year on this one particular date. That’s what he said.

In other words, “Heartbreak Anniversary” refers to the anniversary of a breakup. Valentine’s Day is February 14th, and you and your significant other are feeling down. For some people, Valentine’s Day brings up memories of sadness and despair. My goal was to make agony sound beautiful, therefore I wrote this song.

Giveon’s birthday, “Heartbreak Anniversary” was released on TikTok in early 2021, the song became a viral sensation. On March 15, 2021, the song had achieved 143 million streams with 97 million of them coming from streaming service Spotify.

Lyrics And Composition

He sings of the day he lost his heart in “Heartbreak Anniversary,” remembering every detail and the anguish that comes with it. “Foolishly” anticipating that his ex-lover will return,  he displays emotional and sensitive qualities. When it comes to the music, Giveon’s vocals soar over an electro/soul mashup of piano/percussion.

His “harmonies with himself” turn a statement like “Don’t want to let you out my brain” gospel, according to Apple Music. Eliana Leight of Rolling Stone called the song “a soaring and disconsolate ballad with sad piano and gnarled guitars.” ” It was likened to Frank Sinatra’s voice, but with an R&B flavour and “a youthful new take on the Rat Pack style” by Giveon.

The Views of Others-

The song was described as “enchanting” by Milcah P. of Hot New HipHop, who added, “The cut is marked by a smooth mixing of Giveon’s characteristic baritone and immaculate falsettos. It’s a beautiful showcase of range and composition, and it’s easy to put Giveon on the R&B map.

Punch Liwanag said in Manila Bulletin that the song “is the finest expression of who and what Givon is all about, at least for the time being. ” A highlight from Take Time, according to Wongo Okon of Uproxx.

For his part, Billboard’s Carl Lamarre praised the “pensive lyrics and melancholy soundscapes” of “Heartbreak Anniversary” and “Favorite Mistake” on Take Time.

In Pitchfork’s “Pitchfork Selects” playlist for the week ending March 22, 2021, the song was included.  “Being ‘foolishly patient’ will serve you no good here,” NPR’s Sidney Madden said in their Heat Check segment for February 2021. This is a form of discomfort that only gets worse over time.”
