On Monday, Google introduced a new chatbot tool called “Bard,” an apparent response to the widespread popularity of rival service ChatGPT. Bard will be released to “trusted testers” on Monday, as announced by Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai in a blog post, with intentions to release it to the public “in the following weeks.”

Just like OpenAI’s publicly available ChatGPT, developed using a huge language model, Bard was made available to the public at the end of November. Online data is used to train these models, which then produce engaging responses to user queries.

“Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models,” Pichai wrote. “It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses.”

The news breaks as online search, Google’s bread and butter, is reportedly facing its biggest threat in years. Since its release two months ago, ChatGPT has been used to generate essays, stories, and song lyrics, as well as provide answers to some topics that could have been looked up on Google.

There have been rumors that due to the massive interest in ChatGPT, Google’s management has issued a “code red” for the company’s search operations. Former Google employee and Gmail co-creator Paul Buchheit tweeted last year that the company “may be only a year or two away from total disruption” because of artificial intelligence.

Microsoft has acknowledged plans to invest billions in OpenAI, and the company has already stated that it will integrate the technology into some of its products.

On Tuesday, Microsoft will host a news event in its Washington offices; the event’s theme, however, has not yet been disclosed. Soon after Google’s AI announcement on Monday, Microsoft made the event public.

The technology behind Bard has been around for a while, but it is not generally available to the general public just yet. On Monday, Google said that its LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) technology, which it first showed off about two years ago, will be the engine that drives Bard.

Towards the end of last year, a former Google developer made news for claiming that LaMDA (wiki), a popular chatbot, was “sentient.” The field of artificial intelligence panned his assertions.

In a post published on Monday, Google gave the hypothetical scenario of a user asking Bard to summarise recent discoveries made by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope in a way that a 9-year-old would find engaging. Bard gives a list of points in response to the conversation.

The first one says, “The JWST discovered many galaxies in 2023 that have been dubbed green peas.” Because of their little size, spherical shape, and green color, they were given the nickname “peas.”

According to Google’s blog article, you can utilize Bard to do things like organize a friend’s baby shower, research the differences between two movies nominated for an Academy Award, or figure out what to have for lunch based on the contents in your fridge.

Pichai also announced on Monday that Google’s popular Search function will soon start rolling out AI-powered products.

“Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web,” Pichai wrote, “whether that’s seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner.”

There may be drawbacks associated with a more aggressive strategy on Google’s part to integrate an artificial intelligence chatbot tool into search results. Experts have warned that the fact that these systems are taught using data from the internet means they might potentially perpetuate existing prejudices and disseminate false information.

“It’s critical,” Pichai wrote in his post, “that we bring experiences rooted in these models to the world in a bold and responsible way.”
