The HBO Max-branded streaming service Max has begun airing the Harry Potter TV series.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new service, which combines the original HBO Max with Discovery+ and the tentpole series based on J.K. Rowling’s books, was unveiled by David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, during a presentation on Wednesday.
According to a statement from the newly renamed Max, the live-action series, based on all seven of the series’ books published between 1997 and 2007, would last ten years and be “produced with the same epic craft, love, and care this global franchise is known for.” The series “will have a new cast to guide a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years,” according to the press release.
“While the original, classic, and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and be available to watch globally,” the statement said, “each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world.”
Along with Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts, Rowling will serve as the series executive producer. All eight of the Harry Potter feature films, which were released between 2001 and 2011, were executive produced by David Heyman, who is also in discussions to executive produce this project.
