The performer, who was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, first lived in Iceland before relocating to San Francisco. The volcano Hekla is where the term Heklina comes from.

In 1996, Heklina established herself as a mainstay of the San Francisco drag scene by hosting the well-liked weekly program now known as “Mother,” which featured guests including Lady Gaga and Charro. The organization functioned as a key source of creative inspiration in the neighborhood and created numerous local drag careers, including those of “RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars” champion Alaska Thunderfuck.
