Helen Moynihan, 32, died on Bank Holiday Monday while driving home from a Halloween party for kids in the city. Her hometown of Newcastle West is in a “state of numbness,” say people who live there.
The mother of two leaves behind her partner Seanie, her 7-year-old son Jack, and her 14-month-old daughter Ayla.
The young family was about to move into their forever home in Carrigkerry.
Gardai confirmed Helen’s sad death on the N21 at Reens Pike, south of Rathkeale, the night of the accident. It happened around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, and police are still looking for witnesses to the two-car accident.
Her partner, two children, and the driver of the second car, a man in his 20s, are still at University Hospital Limerick. No one thinks that their conditions will kill them.
The people of Newcastle West, where her family still lives, came together to help Helen’s saddened parents, John, a retired local garda, and Theresa, a social worker.
The district leader for Newcastle West, Councillor Michael Collins, said prayers are being said for Jack and Ayla, who lost their mother at such a young age, and for Seanie and the rest of the Moynihan family.
“This terrible accident is just heartbreaking news for the towns of both Newcastle West and Carrigkerry. Everyone tried hard to believe that the news wasn’t true. Helen was living with her partner and two kids and looking forward to moving into her new home. I knew her from being in the Newcastle West area. “That makes it even sad,” Cllr. Collins said.
Councillor Jerome Scanlan said that the mood in Newcastle West was “surreal,” and he added, “A 32-year-old woman was gone from us in the blink of an eye.” I would say that it made me feel numb. Everyone feels sorry for the family. They went out as a happy family on Monday, but now everything is unfortunate. My God, what can you say? ”

Helen used to work at Pallas Foods and works in Newcastle West at Hunt Office Supplies.
Its director, Seamus Hunt, said, “There is shock and sadness.” He also said, “All Helen’s coworkers and close friends here at Hunt Office will miss her very much.”
Helen grew up in a quiet area called Killoughteen, just outside Newcastle West town.
Councilman Tom Ruddle, who lives in Killoughteen and whose daughter Blathnaid taught her son Jack at the local school, said, “She was a lovely girl with a very bright personality. When she met people, she helped them. She had such a great personality.
“It’s so hard to understand, and it hurts the family. “No one should ever have to go through something like this,” he added.
Helen’s close friend, who asked not to be named, said, “She was so full of life and fun.
“She cared about her kids, her boyfriend Seanie, her parents, and her brother Alan.
“She loved her family and friends very much and was looking forward to a great weekend celebrating a close friend’s wedding. People are just heartbroken because she was always happy.”
The road was closed for a technical check, but on Tuesday morning, it was open again.
Garda is asking anyone on the N21 south of Rathkeale at the time of the accident and had a camera, even a dash cam, to come forward.
Councillor Adam Teskey, who lives nearby, asked people to be careful on the roads, especially when the weather is terrible.
He said that Helen’s death was “heartbreaking” and “devastating” and that her death had left her young family with a “serious void.”
