Here we are talking about His Dark Materials Season 2 Recap. All of it has been leading to this. Will, Lyra, the revelations concerning Dust and other planets, the daemons, Everything has been leading up to this moment when Lord Asriel’s army of rebels will attempt to overthrow the repressive Authority and establish a Republic in place of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Amber Spyglass, Philip Pullman’s expansive and creative third book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, will be adapted for season three. Gallivespians, Mulefa, Angels, Harpies, and the Almighty himself will all be present. To the Land of the Dead, we’ll go. Be ready for some strange events.
Here is a quick recap of the main events of season one (the bears, the North, the gruesome Intercession experiments at Bolvangar, and Lyra’s learning about her mother and father), and below that are the big plot points of season two. Both of those seasons are now streaming on HBO Max in the US and BBC iPlayer in the UK, but if a thorough rewatch is not possible, then this is what we need to keep in mind before the final run.
His Dark Materials Season 2 Recap: What Happened in it?
Lyra and Pan arrived in Cittàgazze, a city where all the adults had either fled or been transformed into soulless husks by Spectres (floating creatures attracted to “Dust” and so only attack adults because children aren’t surrounded by the elementary particles). Asriel, Lyra’s father, had killed Roger to open the window between worlds. Lyra and Pan then followed Asriel through.

There, Lyra met the daemon-free Will, who had escaped from Lord Boreal and the police after inadvertently killing Boreal’s lackey by jumping out the window from his Oxford. Boreal frequently traveled between Lyra and Will’s worlds in pursuit of artifacts like the Subtle Knife, which he intended to find with the help of Will’s father Col. John Parry, who vanished years previously.
Will accompanied Lyra to his Oxford to seek out “the Scholar” as instructed by Lyra’s alethiometer to learn more about Dust. There, she met Dr. Mary Malone, a physicist who was using a quantum computer to research dark matter and dust. Mary was shocked when she connected Lyra to the computer to interact with Dust (similar to the alethiometer).
Mary discovered through it that the renegade angel had spent years assisting human discoveries as retaliation against the oppressive Angel known as “The Authority” (or monotheistic God, worshipped by the Magisterium), who desired for humanity to remain ignorant and servile. Mary was given instructions by an angel to enter Cittàgazze through the Oxford window, where she would be protected by angels from Spectre attacks, and to use the I Ching to converse with them as she traveled to aid Lyra.
Lord Boreal had taken Lyra’s alethiometer from Will’s Oxford and required him to retrieve the Subtle Knife to recover it. Will and Lyra then traveled to Cittàgazze and went to the Tower of the Angels, where Will eventually prevailed in a duel and was chosen to be the knife’s new Bearer despite losing two fingers in the process.
He used it to try to steal the alethiometer back after learning how to use it to open and close portals between worlds, but he was caught by Boreal and his girlfriend Marisa Coulter, Lyra’s mother. After a vicious battle between Lyra and Marisa’s daemons, Lyra and Will managed to escape with the knife and the alethiometer. It informed Lyra that they needed to locate Will’s father since he was still alive.
Years before, Will’s father John Parry—along with explorer Stanislaus Grumman, whose frozen head Asriel incorrectly believed he had presented at Lyra’s college in his talk on Dust—had resided in Lyra’s realm as the shamanic Jopari. Because it was rumored that Jopari could direct him to a potent object (The Subtle Knife) that could safeguard Lyra, astronaut Lee Scoresby, who had assisted Lyra and her companions in escaping from Bolvangar in season one, went in search of Jopari. Lee teamed up with Jopari, and the two of them set out towards Cittàgazze in quest of the knife, unaware that Will, Jopari’s son, had taken possession of it.
Throughout the season, Lyra’s mother, Mrs. Coulter, and the Magisterium search for answers to an old-fashioned witch’s prophecy. Before Mrs. Coulter could extract the information from a witch she had imprisoned, Queen Ruta Skadi flew in and mercy-killed the witch. Additionally, Ruta stabbed the Cardinal, who was eventually put to death by Mrs. Coulter because she preferred Father MacPhail to be more pliable. Despite making significant enemies in the process, MacPhail was elected the next Cardinal after declaring war on the Witches.
The Magisterium discovered through the alethiometer that Lyra is the new Eve, doomed to be tempted by “the serpent” in the Garden of Eden and that her decision will determine the fate of all the worlds. Before she could fulfill that prophecy, the Magisterium waged war on Lyra and sent soldiers to kill her.
As a result, everyone flocked to Cittàgazze in pursuit of the Subtle Knife and the girl who would bring about global change, including Boreal and Mrs. Coulter, Lee and Jopari, the warriors of the Magisterium, and the Witches. There, Mrs. Coulter showed how deeply she could suppress her humanity, such that Spectres didn’t attack her but instead served her.
When she no longer required Boreal, she poisoned him for keeping Lyra from her and tortured the Witch’s prophecy about Lyra using a Spectre. She drugged and abducted Lyra after realizing that the Magisterium would try to kill her to protect her from them. Before he was also shot dead by the Magisterium, Jopari had the opportunity to see the Bearer of the Knife/Will and briefly reconcile with his son before Lee Scoresby and his daemon Hester was slain by Magisterium soldiers and died heroes.
Jopari informed Will just before he passed away that he was the only person in all of creation with the ability to destroy the Authority and that he needed to deliver the Knife to Lord Asriel so it could take part in the upcoming conflict. Finally, during the post-credits scene, Lyra, who was asleep, overheard her best friend Roger in the Land of the Dead pleading for her assistance.
Meaning of Dust in His Dark Materials Season 2
fundamental particles with the consciousness that live all around adults and are present everywhere. In ours, it is known as dark matter, while in Lyra’s, it is known as dust. It is constructed of angels, and it may be reached with the I Ching, Mary’s quantum computer, and the alethiometer. The Magisterium and Mrs. Coulter conducted torturous experiments to try to rid the planet of Dust, which they perceived as proof of sin, despite officially denying its existence (and that of other worlds). The separation of a child from its daemon before adolescence prevented Dust from settling on the child but did so at the cost of turning the child into a soulless, servile zombie, demonstrating the necessity of Dust for consciousness and intellectual freedom.
What is a Subtle Knife?
Here’s how the prologue to Season 2 episode 4 explains:
A group of philosophers started to wonder about the connection between the tiniest atoms three hundred years ago. A tool was forged by them. A knife that, in the right hands, might sever the very threads binding the universes. Both the individual and the knife were given the names “the carrier” and “the subtle knife,” respectively. In Cittàgazze, the guild erected a tower.
A memorial to the knife that they hid there. They kept the knife’s abilities a secret, but faced a decision: should they use it for the good of all life or just their own? They made a poor decision by taking objects to line their own pockets. Specters, something odd and horrible emerged from the shadows.
Then Asriel’s enormous tear in the sky appeared, bringing with it a plague of Spectres in great numbers. Those that made it out fled. Despite being exploited with greed, the delicate knife was created out of hope and could yet save us all if it were in the right hands.
What is Lyra’s Future Predicted by Witches?
This article provides a thorough response to that question with references to Philip Pullman’s books. The Witches think Lyra is destined to replace Eve, to put it briefly (as in Eve from Judaeo-Christian theology). A serpent has been called, Lyra will be tempted, and the decision she voluntarily makes will affect not only the future of her destiny but also the future of every universe.
